In the past, identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) was always painful. People sat around the table scratching their heads trying to figure out what their KPIs should be. In the DoView approach, once you’ve drawn your DoView Visual Strategic Plan you simple eye-ball each box within the visual strategic plan and ask ‘can I measure this box?’ It’s as simple as that!



Look at each box in the plan and aks if you can measure it?

If you can measure it, and if it is controllable by the party you are developing KPIs for then it is a possible KPI. Below are some traditional financial KPIs mapped onto a DoView Visual Strategic Plan.

Lower-level KPIs

People are well aware of the type of financial KPIs we showed above, we just showed them so you know where they fit within a DoView Visual Strategic Plan. The DoView approach comes into it’s own when you’re trying to quickly identify those important lower-level KPIs which you need to measure to ultimately achieve success. Below are some KPIs related to marketing.

Use DoView for prototyping your KPI system

Most people are moving to dashboarding systems for their KPIs these days such as Dashboard. You can use DoView to identify you KPIs against your underlying DoView Visual Strategic Plan. You then just put the KPIs you want to routinely measure into a dashboarding system such as X or just use an excell spread sheet.

Prove that your projects are focused on your priorities

Prove that you're focusing your projects on your priorities. The white number at the bottom of each box shows the number of projects focused on each box. The 'Clarity about IP’ box, in spite of being an ‘A’ priority, does not have any projects focused on it. Therefore, there is a lack of ‘line-of-sight’. It is either not a priority, or it needs at least one new project focused on it.

Use a poster to show you've mapped your projects onto priorities

Rapidly communicate the fact that you have line-of-sight alignment to others. Do this in whatever format is appropriate: within DoView Software, as a printed model, as a printed poster.

Click within DoView Software or produce listing of which boxes each project is focusing on

Either use the DoView Software version of your model and right click on any priority box to see the projects that are focused on it, or create a PDF listing showing this. Conceptually, this provides a standardized language for your to describe the purpose or outcomes of each of your projects. This is essential in all project planning if you are going to ensure strategic alignment. Doing it within DoView is a lot faster and clearer than the traditional approach.
