Dr Paul Duignan - reinventing strategy, outcomes and non-financial results reporting

'Why's this so important? Because if we get our outcomes wrong, we'll get our world wrong.'

'Those who use our approach draw a visual model of their outcomes and the steps they need to achieve them - they then use this to align ALL their organizational planning and measurement work.'

'In addition, our outcomes theory-based framework provides a more sophisticated way of dealing with the thorny problems of measurability, attribution and accountability.'

'Many people find organizational outcomes, strategy and impact measurement work unnecessarily complicated and frustrating . . .'

' . . . I'm on a mission to re-invent Public and Nonprofit outcomes work plus non-financial results measurement in the Private sector.'

'Overall, this is a faster, easier and more transparent way of communicating your work to governance, funders, regulators, stakeholders and shareholders.'

'You can integrate planning, monitoring, performance management, contracting and accountability.'

'Either use an agile visual planning and outcomes approach or end up lagging behind the pack. With intense competition for funding, recognition and strategic advantage, that's something you just can't afford to do.'

Because of the centrality of a visual approach to working in this way, Duignan went on to launch the Startup responsible for developing DoView Strategy and Outcomes Software. There was no other software specifically designed for real-time strategy and outcomes work with groups.

He conceives of it as: 'the world's first true outcomes processor - an agile Swiss Army Knife of a tool designed for anyone doing strategy, at any level. With it, they can throw around strategy ideas and quickly build simple, but not simplistic, outcomes models to measure and align their outcomes with their strategic priorities.'

Duignan consults with organizations including the IMF, governments, private and public sector organizations across all sectors.

Duignan's work

Dr Paul W Duignan, the international outcomes strategist behind the DoView planning approach, DoView software and outcomes theory, developed the approach and software out of frustration at current practice.

Working in strategic planning, performance management, non-financial results and impact measurement across many organizations and sectors, he was appalled at the low-tech, conceptually confused, and non-integrated way outcomes and strategy work was, and still often is, undertaken.

His outcomes theory clarifies the conceptual basis of strategy, outcomes and organizational measurement work. The DoView Planning approach translates the insights of outcomes theory into a robust practical system.

In his work with Boards, and with other levels within organizations, he focuses on agile visual strategic planning and setting up comprehensive outcomes frameworks which fully align strategy, priorites, performance management, impact assessment, risk management, accountability and contracting.

He presents on strategy and outcomes issues to a wide variety of conferences in different disciplines. He blogs at OutcomesBlog.org and is at Twitter.com/PaulDuignan.

Duignan's PhD was in measuring hard-to-measure outcomes at the sector level. He is a Fulbright Senior Scholar and an Honorary Research Fellow at Massey University. He has taught and undertaken research at post-graduate level at several universities and has received international awards for his outcomes work.
